In 2006 and following an international competition which involved more than 8 international networks of Chartered Accountants, the Department of Humanitarian Aid European Commission, ECHO, assigned to IGAF Polaris International (then Polaris International), the auditing of selected Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) which had received grants for humanitarian aid actions.
The contract signed by IGAF Polaris International had a five year duration and its total value exceeded 15 million euro.
ECHO is one of the largest donors of humanitarian aid worldwide. Its partners include the United Nations, the Red Cross and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
It was the second time that DG ECHO delegated the audit of funded humanitarian aid projects to IGAF Polaris International. The first time was for the period 2002-2006 and was the first assignment of its kind. Success was such that the European Commission decided that audits had to be carried out thereafter, primarily by external auditors, rather than just from internal auditors.
